16 Hour Outdoor First Aid Course
Outdoor first aid training delivered by extremely experienced instructors
A 16-hour Outdoor First Aid practical based course designed to teach how to administer first aid in an outdoor or remote environment. The course is very practical where we use a mixture of outdoor exercises to simulate injuries that may be found in a variety of outdoor situations.
The 16 Hours Outdoor First Aid course is aimed at people undertaking the role of a first aider in an outdoors environment and meets the requirements of outdoor first training for many outdoor awards such as Mountain Leaders, Snowsports Instructors, Mountain Bike Guides and Forestry workers. The training syllabus is also very suitable for Ecologists and Rangers as well as Duke of Edinburgh Award leaders and Forest Schools Teachers.
We can also include full Paediatric assessments and issue the Paediatric certificate that meets the HSE/Ofsted/EYFS Requirements.
The 2 Day Outdoor First Aid course also covers the Emergency First Aid at Work syllabus that meets the requirements of Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations on first aid training, therefore we issue the Emergency First Aid at Work certificate along with the Outdoor First Aid certificate.

Major Bleeding:
Major bleeding although mostly low risk could happen and you should really know how to deal with it especially if you are far away from help. Our Outdoor first aid training course covers the use of tourniquets, pressure dressings and haemostatic dressings. The Optimal First Aid way is to be prepared wherever you may be.
Paediatric First Aid:
If you are working with under 18-year-olds then you need the skills and confidence to deal with a child in an emergency. Our 16 Hour Outdoor First Aid course covers all paediatric subjects so if you work in a Forest School setting and require the Paediatric qualification, we can assess you on that where you can then include the Paediatric certificate.
First Aid Training Subjects:
Our 2 Day Outdoor First Aid courses cover topics including how to assess a situation and casualty, airway, breathing and circulation assessments, emergency resuscitation, and safe airway position along with treatment of severe bleeding and shock, major injuries, breaks and fractures and environmental injuries such as hypothermia. We cover a range of medical conditions too. The course will cover Emergency First Aid inside and outside. So, we can certificate the Emergency First Aid at Work if required.

EXCELLENT Based on 201 reviews Shaun Skingle2025-01-30Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Did a course with Toby, great guy, great knowledge and he made it interesting! Anthony Turner2025-01-27Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Very well delivered Outdoor First Aid and Pediatric First Aid Course. The knowledgable instructiors followed the EDIP (Explaination, Delivery,Imitation and Practice) system of course delivery. This was backed up with realistic scenario based problems that allowed participants to utilise the knowledge and skills gained throughout the course. No hesitation in recommending Optimal First Aid. John Bodley Scott2025-01-21Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I would highly recommend this course - hands on and interactive, with plenty of 'real-life' scenarios for working in the outdoors, delivered with humour, and with plenty of support even if you dont get it right the first time. Kerry Wykes2025-01-19Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Up until now I’ve never been able say I enjoyed a First Aid course, so 16 hours of Outside First Aid filled me with dread. And then I found myself on one of Toby & Pete’s courses; book with Optimal First Aid and you will not be disappointed! Engaging, interesting and fun from the start… I learned up to date methods, took part in realistic scenarios (the acting was fantastic) and came away for the first time ever thinking that I can actually be useful in a real life situation. I had a chance to practice the very first night, Chris ripped his toenail off (lots of blood) and I didn’t squeal or panic, but took control (hiding the bleach, #iykyk), cleaned and dressed the wound and then made a lovely cup of tea! :) All thanks to Toby & Pete. Thanks both, I had a great two days! gus Glazebrook2025-01-02Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I did the 16 hour Outdoor First Aid course at Dartmoor Activity Centre. I wasn't much looking forward to this as I was expecting to be bored to death for two days but I couldn't have been more wrong and I wasn't bored for a moment. The mix of classroom learning, demonstrations and practical work held my attention and got the message across very effectively. I feel a lot better equipped to deal with an emergency situation. When renewal time comes round in three years I won't bother looking around, I'll go straight back to Optimal First Aid. Thank you Jazz Austin2024-12-24Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Really enjoyed the 2 day training course with Toby and Pete. The sessions had a good combination of practical activities and content discussions, which helped embed the learning, and was exactly what we needed for our team Emily Tyack2024-12-13Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Toby puts emphasis in making sure you understand why certain things may be happening in first aid situations, rather than teaching you a text book. The result is a more comprehensive and practical education that feels more applicable to real world situations than any other course I've done. Acting out scenarios forms a large part of the course to solidify your theoretical learning. I really enjoyed these as both Toby and Pete are a: stella actors, and b: constructive teachers, so you're not worried about "getting it wrong". Would definitely recommend. Katie2024-12-06Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I really enjoyed Outdoor First Aid course, very practical and hands on. Everything was explained clearly and with no PowerPoint meant that things were so much easier to understand because they were broken down and explained thoroughly. My favourite part was the scenarios. The course was really interesting, best first aid course I’ve done. Ian Glanville2024-12-01Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Optimal First Aid delivered a great Outdoor First Aid course with practial scenarios that amplified the learning experience. Guy Sturtivant2024-11-18Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great 2 day first aid for outdoors course led by Toby. Small group, loads of practical ideas about identifying problems and the best course of action to help a patient with lots of practice sessions along the way on a live 'casualty'! Definitely updated my practice and added to my confidence if ever I'm involved in supporting victims.
