Outdoor First Aid Courses

16 Hour Outdoor First Aid course for those those working away from immediate assistance

Hands-on Outdoor First Aid Courses built for real-world emergencies

We are renowned for delivering highly practical and engaging Outdoor First Aid courses aimed at people undertaking the role of a first aider in an outdoors environment such as Mountain Leaders and Outdoor activity instructors to Forest School Leaders and Duke of Edinburgh leaders.

Our courses are highly practical delivered by experienced tutors with a background in outdoor and remote environments. We use a mixture of outdoor learning to simulate injuries and accidents found in a variety of outdoor settings whether it be outdoor sports, mountain leading, hill walking or forest schools. As first aid is a practical subject, learners will participate in practical hands-on training with continuous assessment and constructive feedback throughout.

As many outdoor instructors and forest school practitioners also work in an Early Years school setting, we can also award the certificate for Paediatric First Aid which is a requirement by OFSTED for EYFS, in addition to the 16hr Outdoor First Aid certificate.

All our first aid qualifications provide certificates which are valid for 3 years. CPR and First Aid is taught in accordance with the current UK Resuscitation Council Guidelines.

Why our Outdoor First Aid Courses stand out

At Optimal First Aid, we understand that outdoor adventures, whether you’re hiking in the wilderness, mountaineering, camping in remote areas, or engaging in high-risk sports, come with unique challenges. The more remote the environment, the harder it can be to access help quickly in the event of an emergency. That’s where our Outdoor First Aid Courses come in. We provide you with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to handle a variety of medical emergencies in outdoor and remote settings, ensuring you’re ready for whatever comes your way.

Let’s be honest — there are a lot of first aid courses out there. But not all of them are built for the grit, unpredictability, and raw reality of outdoor environments. Ours are.

Here’s why people choose Optimal First Aid and keep coming back:

Built by Those Who’ve Done It for Real

We’re not armchair instructors reading from a manual. Our trainers have real-world experience in the military, remote expeditions, and high-risk outdoor environments. We’ve dealt with casualties in the field, not just classrooms. You’re learning from people who’ve walked the walk — sometimes uphill, in the rain, carrying a stretcher.

Practical, Scenario-Based Training

We don’t just teach you what to do — we drop you into realistic scenarios and make you do it. You’ll be treating injuries in the mud, under pressure, with limited resources — just like the real thing. Because let’s face it, the wilderness doesn’t come with comfy chairs and PowerPoint.

Outdoor-Specific, No-Fluff Content

Our courses focus purely on what matters in outdoor and remote settings — trauma care, evacuation techniques, weather-related injuries, and the kind of improvised decision-making you can’t fake. No filler, no fluff. Just vital skills you can trust when help is hours away.

Nationally Recognised Certification

You’ll walk away not just with confidence, but with a qualification that’s recognised and respected across the UK — meeting industry standards for outdoor instructors, group leaders, and professionals operating in high-risk environments.

Tailored for Real People, Not Just Paperwork

Whether you’re a mountain leader, event organiser, or weekend wild camper — we tailor the training to your world. Need to focus on group management? Child-specific scenarios? Kit improvisation? We’ll shape the course to suit what you actually deal with out there.

We Keep It Engaging (and a Bit Fun, Too)

First aid is serious business — but that doesn’t mean the course has to be boring. Our instructors bring energy, banter, and a bit of humour into every session. Because when you’re laughing and learning, you remember more. And when things go wrong in the real world, that’s exactly what you need.
