About Optimal First Aid
Optimal First Aid are a Veteran owned Devon based training provider that deliver First Aid and CPR courses for small and large organisations. Our training is delivered from knowledge and experience with real time situations gained with training and experiences from the Armed Forces, Ambulance service and Mountain Rescue.
We deliver practical, relevant and engaging first aid training. Delivered by a small group of extraordinary, unique people and provide the most hands-on, practical, relevant and engaging first aid courses available.
Optimal First Aid was founded by Toby Osborne following a successful career in the British Army. An outdoor enthusiast with medical experience developed across a wide range of multi-cultural environments in both training and high pressure, operational environments. These included Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan along with training exercises throughout the world. From leaving the Army Toby operated overseas as a contractor delivering first aid training and delivery of specialist medical courses in challenging circumstances both in the classroom and outdoor environments. Most noticeably training and support of a local national company in Northern Iraq and a 3-year mentoring and training project in Saudi Arabia. From returning home he noticed firsthand how such poor quality some first aid training was delivered in the UK where many organisations were treating training as a tick in the box exercise.
Why choose us - Time for a change, people deserve better.
The mission was clear, set the standard, deliver the training to the highest quality anywhere to anyone. Optimal was formed to offer an extensive range of training courses and qualifications for both workplace, urban and remote environments
Optimal First Aid training courses are based on knowledge and experience in real situations. We are subject matter experts that have a wealth of practical, hands-on real-life experience in the field.
Pre-hospital care qualifications alongside Combat Medic qualifications gained from the British Army and continuous personal development (CPD) gives us a unique edge, but its not just the qualifications, we have the experience. Holding a qualification is vital but answering difficult questions or building competence and confidence requires various skills, knowledge and background.
Staying awake on a course – Death by PowerPoint!
Im sure we have all heard this? More coffee anyone?! Well let’s face it, PowerPoint is usually used very poorly. It can show that the trainer has little knowledge on the subject when they just read from slide to slide.
PowerPoint, when used correctly can be a very useful tool for a first aid class, you won’t see much of it on our basic courses if at all, we use other methods – ENGAGMENT!
Our regulated training courses
Regulated – under control.
Our high quality training courses are controlled by us. What does that mean? Well, our basic courses such as workplace Emergency First Aid at Work and First Aid at Work to our 16 Hour Outdoor First Aid are regulated by Optimal’s strict but very competent team of instructors and quality assurance team. This allows us to move with the times of updates and guidelines from Resuscitation Council UK or Royal College of Surgeons Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care whilst meeting the requirements of The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
Accredited – professional body or organisation has assessed and approved
Our higher spec courses such as FPOS have been approved by a professional body ensuring they are meeting the assurance of quality and standards. These accredited courses count towards professional qualifications or registration with a professional body. Our courses are externally accredited by Qualifications Network.
We aim to deliver the best training.
Workplace First Aid
Our two main workplace first aid training courses are the three-day First Aid at Work and the one-day Emergency First Aid at Work courses. These courses are critical to the workplace but sometimes understanding what is best for you and your company can be confusing. Read our brief explanation know the difference between First Aid at Work and Emergency First Aid at Work.
Forestry First Aid (+F)
This is the 1-day Emergency First Aid +F (EFAW+F) course, delivered by our highly experienced trainer. Real-world examples and scenarios will be given. Also included to comply with the latest HSE and 2021 Resuscitation Guidelines, the course will focus heavily on Tourniquets and Haemostatic dressings with other bleed control methods.
Outdoor First Aid Courses
This Outdoor First Aid course delivered over 16 hours is recognised by Mountain Training, British Canoeing, RYA and many other governing bodies as fulfilling the requirements for Outdoor First Aid including Forest School leaders and those working with children therefore, we can include full Paediatric assessments and issue the Paediatric certificate. A highly practical course that’s delivered by experienced tutors with a background in outdoor and remote environments.
Forestry First Aid Courses
The Forestry First Aid Training courses can include the standard Emergency First Aid at Work or the First Aid at Work syllabus but adds additional extra content to make it relevant to the forestry context in which it is delivered. Aimed at Tree Surgeons and other outdoor workers, these courses are the benchmark first aid courses for outdoor environments.
Realistic training
Our training courses are delivered in pragmatic style where we interact and engage whilst using our method of practical training giving delegates as realistic as possible scenarios to develop a true understanding of an emergency. This is by far not just a fun way of learning but the best way to ensure delegates engage and learn.
Our courses apply knowledge and skills in realistic scenarios to develop a true understanding of the subject and build confidence in how to deal with an injured or ill casualty.
Once you have attended one of courses you will find it different to others you previously have been on, our great delegates get really involved and engage with the subject matter. The positive feedback we receive is a credit to us and our training programmes.
EXCELLENT Based on 197 reviews gus Glazebrook2025-01-02Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I did the 16 hour Outdoor First Aid course at Dartmoor Activity Centre. I wasn't much looking forward to this as I was expecting to be bored to death for two days but I couldn't have been more wrong and I wasn't bored for a moment. The mix of classroom learning, demonstrations and practical work held my attention and got the message across very effectively. I feel a lot better equipped to deal with an emergency situation. When renewal time comes round in three years I won't bother looking around, I'll go straight back to Optimal First Aid. Thank you Jazz Austin2024-12-24Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Really enjoyed the 2 day training course with Toby and Pete. The sessions had a good combination of practical activities and content discussions, which helped embed the learning, and was exactly what we needed for our team Emily Tyack2024-12-13Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Toby puts emphasis in making sure you understand why certain things may be happening in first aid situations, rather than teaching you a text book. The result is a more comprehensive and practical education that feels more applicable to real world situations than any other course I've done. Acting out scenarios forms a large part of the course to solidify your theoretical learning. I really enjoyed these as both Toby and Pete are a: stella actors, and b: constructive teachers, so you're not worried about "getting it wrong". Would definitely recommend. Everything was explained clearly and with no PowerPoint meant that things were so much easier to understand because they were broken down and explained thoroughly. My favourite part was the scenarios. The course was really interesting, best first aid course I’ve done. Ian Glanville2024-12-01Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Guy Sturtivant2024-11-18Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great 2 day first aid for outdoors course led by Toby. Small group, loads of practical ideas about identifying problems and the best course of action to help a patient with lots of practice sessions along the way on a live 'casualty'! Definitely updated my practice and added to my confidence if ever I'm involved in supporting victims. Thomas Webster2024-11-18Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Toby was extremely experienced and knowledgeable. I've always found it hard to take on and retain knowledge around First Aid but found the way that Toby delivered it easy to understand and remember. I found the practical scenarios really useful as well as the reviews of each scenario that followed. I felt that my questions were answered really well which helped my understanding. I would definitely recommend!!! mr cez2024-11-16Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Good training provider! sally carr2024-11-06Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excellent trainer in Toby would highly recommend, we were quite a large group of staff who all work together on a daily basis so a little unruly (in a good way) but he really was fantastic at making a good job of us all passing and enjoying it Peter Cook2024-10-28Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This must be the 3rd or 4th outdoor first aid course that I have done. The 1st with Optimal First Aid. Will not be using another provider form now on. Great course. Toby was great, professional, delivered well, had the experience to back up his teachings and really focused on the things that would really help when dealing with a real life situation. The props and hands on assessments really helped in terms of it being a real situation that you had to deal with. Would recommend to anyone.
